The Tri-ennial Cycle of Torah Readings (Restored!)

by Tracy Phillip Osborne

In the Land of Israel, during the 1st Century, the Synagogues (Congregations) followed a Tri-ennial or Septennial Cycle of Torah Readings - This was the Original Torah Cycle given by Moses. This means that The 5 books of Moses were divided up into sections to be read each week. The Torah was read and studied over a 3 1/2 year cycle - thus the term: Tri-ennial. The process would then restart and go through another 3 1/2 years. So, 3.5years + 3.5years = 7years - thus the term Septennial for 7 years. If you remember, Israel's Calendar was divided up into 7 year periods. After 7 of these 7 year periods, equaling 49 years, there was a Jubilee year on the 50th year. In that Jubilee year, the Torah (The 5 Books of Moses) was divided up into an Annual Cycle.

After the Sanhedrin was banned and exiled out of Israel by the Romans, in the late 300's, the Annual Cycle was promoted to such an extent that the Tri-ennial / Septennial Cycle fell into disuse. Most of Judaism continues to follow the Annual Cycle and The Hebrew Roots Movement, in its various stages of development, continues to follow it also. I followed the Annual Cycle until a year ago.

There are a few versions of the Tri-ennial Cycle of Torah Readings, but, to me, the one below is the real deal. After Synchronizing to this one below over the past year, I have found it to be amazing. Not only was the Torah given on Mt. Sinai, so was this system of Torah study. The Cycle is interrupted by the Festival Readings during the year, so that, whether you're following The Annual or The Tri-ennial Cycle, all will be following the same Readings for Festivals.

Another beautiful truth is that The Psalms are also organized around this Cycle. Not only that, but there is a Prophetic passage for each week organized around it. And, furthermore, the 4 Gospels, are also organized according to the weekly readings of this Cycle. Notice the first verse of Genesis "In the Beginning" ...Then, notice the first verses of each Gospel...each one began anew, the 3 1/2 year cycle on a higher  interpretive level.
